Clever cloggs: UK universities Cambridge, Oxford, Royal College of Art and Insitute of Education come top of the class for eight subjects in annual QS global rankings
UK universities are the top places to study eight subjects including maths, languages, history and art, according to the annual QS global league tables.
Four UK universities led the way across eight subjects, with the University of Oxford top for four subjects and the University of Cambridge coming top dog for three.
UCL's Institute of Education and the Royal College of Art also featured on the list, unsurprisingly for art and education respectively.
The annual rankings of subject strength at world higher education institutions are published annually by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS).
Researchers used the opinions of 76,798 academics and 44,426 employers to inform the results, alongside the analysis of 28.5 million research papers.
Although the US came out on top, with Harvard University and MIT topping the league tables with 24 subjects between them, UK universities also took 16 second-place rankings and 21 third-place rankings, with increases in both academic and employer reputation.
"Though the US and UK remain dominant, our most inclusive rankings ever show that excellence can be found in an ever-increasing number of places," Ben Sowter, head of the QS Intelligence Unit, said.
"Nations like Austria, South Africa, Finland, Brazil, China, and Sweden can be found in the top ten of our tables. Our new top 100 for performing arts acknowledges academic excellence in 27 different countries, while our top 100 for mineral engineering recognises 26 countries.”
