City still yet to see real rise in job vacancies
THE CITY jobs market was 14 per cent quieter than a year ago last month, despite an increase in vacancies since July, figures out today claim.
According to recruitment specialists Astbury Marsden, there were 2,490 jobs on offer last month, up 16 per cent from 2,150 in July. However, there are still fewer vacancies than were seen in August last year, when 2,920 posts were advertised.
Employment in financial services has lagged behind many other sectors of the economy since the financial crisis.
Astbury Marsden’s Mark Cameron suggests that vacancies are now on the rise: “City employers do seem to be feeling more comfortable about staffing up in their most profitable divisions.” He added: “There is still plenty of scope for shocks on the road ahead, as we have seen even in the last few weeks with concerns over the situation in Syria and issues in India.”
The recruiters add that there are nearly twice as many people looking for jobs in the City as vacancies available. According to estimates, 4,680 people were seeking employment in the Square Mile last month.
