City better wins big on a modest bet at the Grand National, but one high-flyer wasn’t so lucky
Congratulations to the unnamed City worker who made a handsome profit on the Grand National this weekend.
Bookies at Ladbrokes tell The Capitalist that a besuited worker visited the firm’s Moorgate branch last week to place a modest £50 bet on winner Rule the World; owned by Ryanair boss Michael O'Leary and then an outsider at 33/1.
Look out for the lucky gambler this morning as they return to the Square Mile to collect their £2125 winnings.
Not quite so lucky were two high-flyers banking on the bookies' favourites. Ladbrokes' Alex Donohue was most pleased to see favourite and last year’s winner Many Clouds fall to 16th place. He tells us: "We've barely finished counting the cash. The payout queues in city betting shops on Monday lunchtime will be very short indeed."
Comiserations, then, to the well-heeled racing fan who put all his faith in Many Clouds, and has now lost a staggering £10,000 after placing an each way bet on the former champion.
