Christmas toys to inspire little professionals
GONE are the days, it seems, when young boys and girls dreamed vaguely of becoming a policeman or ballerina.
These days, according to John Lewis’s top five toy list, those careers are being moulded by their favourite television programmes and the stars they see.
According to the retail store, youngsters aspiring to be the next Steve Jobs will make the furry and iPad-compatible Furby (£59,99) a best-seller – even with its naff Christmas jumper – while wannabe Jamie Olivers and Nigella Lawsons will hike sales for the £50 Mini Kitchen, and the spy watch and pen set (£15) is tipped to appeal to Sherlock Holmes types.
John Lewis toy buyer Ian Ellis said: “With Furbys selling out in record time last year, we expect these furry friends to be another huge hit. Taking tips from Britain’s favourite television shows such as The Apprentice and Jamie’s 30 Minute Meals, the next generation are inspired to recreate these professions at home with creative and innovative play.”
It follows that the £89.99 Lego winter village cottage must be aimed at budding property developers while the £19.99 Doc McStuffin will be a hit with aspiring doctors. Pick your gifts accordingly.
