Children in Need 2015 raises £37m to set new record for BBC charity event
The Children in Need charity show raised over £37m last night, a new record for the annual BBC fundraising event.
Despite longstanding host Terry Wogan's absence for health reasons, the five-and-a-half-hour TV event last night raised more money that ever before – smashing the £32.6m raised on the night last year.
Dermot O'Leary stepped in to hosting duties alongside Nick Grimshaw, Fearne Cotton, Tess Daly and others, while Dame Helen Mirren, Martin Freeman, Ellie Goulding, the entire cast of Eastenders and many other figures from the world of showbusiness.
It marked the first time Wogan has not hosted the show since it started in 1980.
Yet it did little to dampen the charitable spirit among viewers who donated £37m to the charity.
And that total could rise even further with projects continuing into the new year.
Last a year the final total stood at £49.1m, while the largest ever belongs to 2013's effort of £32.6m raised.
