Chilcot report release date set: Iraq inquiry’s two million word report will be published in June or July 2016
Sir John Chilcot has finally set a date for the publication of his long-awaited inquiry into the UK's role in the Iraq War.
The report will be published in June or July of next year, according to a letter Chilcot sent to Prime Minister David Cameron.
The letter was published on the Chilcot inquiry's website this morning.
Chilcot said the text of the massive report – which runs two million words – will be finished by next April, but after that it will need to go through National Security checking before publication.
In a reply letter to Chilcot sent this morning, Cameron said that while he welcomed the inquiry's "clear end in sight", he is "disappointed" by the timeline.
"I am disappointed – and I know the families of those who served in Iraq will also be disappointed – that you do not believe it will be possible logistically to publish your report until early summer," the Prime Minister wrote.
