Charlton fire brought under control: Smoke from warehouse blaze could be seen for miles around

A huge fire that broke out at a food distribution warehouse in Charlton, south London, has been brought under control according to the London Fire Brigade (LFB). The fire engulfed a row of six lorries and left four patients suffering from smoke inhalation.

The LFB recommended that residents nearby close all doors and windows as the blaze raged. The fire was big enough for the fire brigade to send 10 fire engines and a total of 72 firefighters and officers to the scene. The cause of the blaze is under investigation.

Station Manager Bruce Grain who was at the scene, said at the time:

The fire is affecting six lorries and part of the warehouse which measures 150m by 70m. Local road closures are in place and motorists are advised to avoid the area.

In a statement, the fire brigade allayed fears of disruptions to flights from London City airport, saying the fire had "no impact" on operations there.

Pictures on Twitter showed huge clouds of black smoke billowing across the road from the blaze.

The fire is believed to have started at 4:08pm, and the cause is as yet unknown. The LFB sent this tweet, showing the fire’s location:
