Champagne for Morgan Stanley banker after Galileo Gold wins big at Newmarket
We expect a few sore heads at Morgan Stanley this morning following Sunday’s flat races at Newmarket.
Galileo Gold, which City A.M. tipped to win big at the races last weekend, started as a relative outsider at 14/1 on Sunday, but quickly became an easy winner of the Qipco 2000 Guineas under Frankie Dettori after the odds-on favourite Air Force Blue turned out to be a flop.
Dettori leapt into the air after crossing the line and straight into the arms of Galileo Gold’s trainer, ex-Etonian Hugo Palmer.
Palmer became a powerful ally of the US investment bank last summer when he married his Australian girlfriend Vanessa Webb – who works as an associate at the Canary Wharf-based firm.
"Masterful ride, willing partner," Palmer told Sporting Life of his money-making beast. "I feel so lucky to have him. He's a beautiful, lovely horse, who has just got better and better and better."
The horse won £283,550, so suffice to say the post-work drinks are on Webb all week long.
