Celtic come to Tower Hamlets as Charlie Mulgrew launches charity programme Breaking Barriers
Celtic FC star and Scotland international Charlie Mulgrew will be helping the club hark back to its east London heritage today with the launch of a new three-year charitable sports programme in Tower Hamlets.
The midfielder will be joined by the boss of Celtic’s charity arm Tony Hamilton to launch the Breaking Barriers programme, a scheme of sports and arts activities designed to target kids at risk of falling prey to gang culture. The scheme, funded by the Big Lottery Fund and supported by 5 Star Active and Poplar HARCA, will run 48 weeks a year in the borough.
Celtic FC founder Brother Walfrid left Scotland five years after starting the club and moved south to work in the east end, helping poor children by teaching at St. Anne’s School, Whitechapel.
Good to see the club back in London.
