Car scrappage scheme boosts sales by 280,000
NEARLY 290,000 cars have been sold through the government’s scrappage scheme.
The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) said yesterday that 284,479 new cars were registered through the scrappage scheme between May and December.
The scheme, which rewards consumers trading in their old vehicle for a new, fuel-efficient one with a £2,000 subsidy, accounted for just over a fifth of all new car registrations in December.
“The Scrappage Incentive Scheme has helped significantly to increase new car registrations in each of the last six months,” said SMMT chief executive Paul Everitt. “This has provided an important boost to the UK motor industry and greater confidence for consumers.” The scheme runs until the end of February and the trade body said 85,000 more people could take advantage of it.
