Canon Chancellor quits St Paul’s over threat to force out activists
THE CANON Chancellor of St Paul’s has quit the cathedral, saying he did not want to see “violence” used to clear the protesters’ camp.
Reverend Dr Giles Fraser (right) said his conscience meant he could not support St Paul’s if it joined with the City of London Corporation to evict the Occupy LSX activists.
He wrote on Twitter that he was leaving with “great regret and sadness” and later said he would have preferred to see the size of the camp reduced and the cathedral remain open.
It came as London Mayor Boris Johnson called for new law to prevent protest camps “erupting like boils”, and the head of the Metropolitan Police is said to be deciding within 48 hours whether to forcibly move the camps at the cathedral and Finsbury Square.
