Canary Wharf jobs up 350 per cent in a decade
DESPITE the impact of the financial crisis, there were nearly four times as many employees in Canary Wharf last year than there were in 2001.
According to the Office for National Statistics, the number of people working in the bustling financial centre in 2012 was 100,500, in comparison to only 27,400 eleven years earlier.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, employment in finance and insurance services drove much of the increase, more than quadrupling in the period, even after the effect of 2008’s crash.
TheCityUK, a professional body, also drew attention to the importance of the UK’s financial services in a report released yesterday, saying that finance and related services employed 2.1m people across the country.
The publication added that seven per cent of employment in the UK is accounted for by the sector, in comparison to the European average of 5.3 per cent. The proportion of British jobs in financial services is one of the highest in the EU, behind Cyprus and Luxembourg.
