Canary Wharf has surprised us all, beating the City of London for the best child-friendly Easter weekend activities
The financial district may be a dull, grey, and grown-up affair during the working week, but folks in the Square Mile and Canary Wharf are pulling out all the stops to make this weekend a cheery, child-friendly Spring celebration.
What says family fun better than hunting for colourful eggs surrounded by slabs of concrete? Canary Wharf Group has doubled its efforts to make the Docklands kid-friendly, as it puts on a series of events for youngsters and their parents this weekend.
Wishing Wharfers a “Hoppy Easter”, folks in the financial district can take part in a bunny-ear craft workshop, have their faces painted, and take a peek at one of London’s most expensive chocolate eggs in Cabot Square.
Affectionately named “Big Bertha”, the cocoa-monolith by Charbonnel et Walker weighs a whopping 27 pounds, and is hand decorated with traditional, Victorian designs.
Canary Wharfers are also being given the chance to win the egg for themselves. If you can stomach the teasing from your colleagues, taking a picture of yourself in one of the bunny-shaped peepholes located around the estate and tweeting it to @yourcanarywharf enters you into a prize-draw to take Big Bertha home.
Speaking of slabs of concrete, the brutalist Barbican Centre is also putting on an Easter-egg hunt, though folks in the City will have to wait till next week before they can take part. Meanwhile, grandees of the City of London are having to hold off celebrations altogether, as the corporation’s annual Easter Banquet in Guildhall won’t take place until April.
