Businesses call for another Thames bridge in the east
LONDON firms and politicians yesterday renewed calls for a new Thames bridge to be built in the east of the city, after decades of delays and cancellations.
Businesses including Leyton Orient football club signed a letter to the Mayor of London yesterday asking him to commit to a road crossing at Gallions Reach.
Boris Johnson scrapped plans for the Thames Gateway Bridge in 2008 and aimed to install a new ferry crossing at Gallions Reach. However, TfL was asked to consult again on the bridge concept last year and Johnson said this month that London would have a new road crossing within a decade.
“This is a no-brainer in political terms – we should just get on and do it,” said Lord Adonis, Labour’s shadow infrastructure minister.
The London Chamber of Commerce pointed out that the city has 22 fixed road crossings over the river west of Tower Bridge, but just two in the east.
