Buffett’s annual bidding war off to a good start
NEVER mind the scores of brands owned by Berkshire Hathaway, it turns out Warren Buffett is a more sought after commodity than any of his products. Each year he creates a bidding war so that one lucky (and presumably very wealthy) person can enjoy a power lunch with the Oracle of Omaha. Where else could it take place except eBay? Bidding this year started on Sunday and it goes on for six days. The first bid was a modest $25,000 but the highest at time of writing stood at $350,300 – with proceeds all goes to charity Glide (it reached a high of $3.46m three years ago).
Well, we thought – why not encourage our own high-achievers to do something similar. Surely there are many powerful people in this country we’d pay to have lunch with. Come on Sir Richard Branson – offer us a two hour lunch with you on Necker. Or you Sir Alan Sugar. What about the so-called UK answer to his royal Buffettness, Jim Mellon?
One of Buffett’s previous lunch dates, hedgie Ted Weschler, managed to get a job out of their exchange. We’re sure our City high flyers would love a shot at working for our own business legends.
