Brits positive about autonomous vehicles’ benefits, BSI reveals
Brits are confident that self-driving cars will bring many benefits such safety gains, a BSI opinion poll revealed.
Out of 1,000 people interviewed, 70 per cent see the benefits of autonomous cars, in particular when it comes to avoiding driver errors and reducing accidents, with people aged between 18 and 24 the most inclined to adopt the technology.
Public confidence in connected and automated vehicles was also boosted by the presence of safety operators whilst the technology is trialled. According to the poll, 59 per cent of respondents said they would feel more confident as a passenger in an automated vehicle if there was an onboard safety operator.
“Our new research has found that the successful deployment of automated vehicles in the UK depends on the public’s confidence in their own safety,” BSI’s director of sectors Anne Hayes. “It shows that safety operators have a critical role in both automated vehicle trials and development testing, as well as the promotion of greater trust in the new technologies.”
