British universities falling out of favour, says top-rated survey
BRITISH universities are falling out of favour, with only five UK institutions ranked in the world’s top 50.
According to The Times Higher Education Magazine’s table, which is based on criteria including research, and teaching, Harvard is the world’s leading university.
The survey concludes that the US accounts for 72 of the world’s 200 best universities. Meanwhile only three British universities appear in the top ten – Cambridge, Oxford and Imperial College London.
This assessment comes only a week after a separate survey by the careers advice
company QS ranked Cambridge at the top. In previous years the Times and QS
collaborated.
While the QS survey places only four UK universities in its top ten, significantly a UK
institution tops the pile.
Speaking yesterday, Professor Steve Smith, president of Universities UK, said, “The
higher education sector is one of the UK’s international success stories, but it faces unprecedented competition.
The Times’ top ten is Harvard, California Institute of Technology, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford, Princeton, Cambridge, Oxford, University of California, Imperial College London and Yale.
