British people want a new national anthem and they want it to be Land of Hope and Glory instead of God Save the Queen
The results are in: Land of Hope and Glory has piped its competition to the post, emerging as the country's song preference to become the official national anthem of England.
Earlier this week MPs voted in favour of introducing a bill to parliament on adopting an official national anthem for England, so that England has its own national anthem like Scotland and Wales.
And the public loved it: the poll by YouGov revealed 57 per cent of people are in favour of having a national anthem, while just 22 per cent are opposed.

Currently, God Save the Queen is the national anthem for the UK as a whole, used by England at most sporting events.
The research shows that Land of Hope and Glory to be the favourite among English people, beating alternatives including God Save the Queen itself.
Toby Perkins, the Labour MP who proposed the bill, said: "England is a component part of the UK but it competes as a country in its own right and I think a song that celebrated England rather than Britain would be more appropriate."

And Scottish people are even more supportive than the British average, with 60% in favour and only 9% opposed.
Interestingly, a majority of supporters of every major party support England having a national anthem, but Conservative voters are actually more likely to oppose (29 per cent) than Labour voters (18 per cent).
