Britain may miss fourth “global, technology-driven” industrial revolution
Britain is in danger of missing out on a fourth industrial revolution, according to research from manufacturers’ organisation EEF.
The group said its data shows that Britain is on the cusp of a “global, technology-driven” industrial revolution, with 80 per cent of the 206 decision-makers it surveyed stating that it will become a business reality by 2025.
However, 58 per cent of the respondents said the UK is “in danger of being left behind”, and just 14 per cent think the UK is “readily equipped for a leading role” in an industrial revolution.
Terry Scuoler, EEF’s chief executive, called on the government to “step up to the challenge” and work with manufacturers and academics to ensure the UK is ready for change when it comes.
He commented: “The fourth industrial revolution will change the global face of manufacturing beyond recognition. The UK must take a leading role if we are to realise our ambitions for a healthy, balanced and growing economy.”
EEF is set to present its manifesto, which reiterates its calls for government action, at the National Manufacturing Conference on Thursday this week.
