Bordeaux Index reveals cork-popping champagne sales as economy recovers
In the first ten months of 2013 wine merchant Bordeaux Index sold over £11m worth of champagne, close to double the amount the sold over same period last year.
Champagne made up close to 17 per cent of of the company's total sales in 2013 compared to eight per cent for the same period last year. The company attributed the lavish increase in champagne sales to increasing consumer confidence and the gathering pace of the UK's economic recovery.
Managing director, Gary Boom, said:
Soaring champagne sales mark the onset of more indulgent consumer behaviour in the U.K. and are reflective of the growing trend towards champagne becoming an everyday consumer choice, versus purely celebratory.
Leading champagne retailers such as Moet Chandon have been attempting to popularise champagne as an every day drink, going so far as to install the world's first champagne vending machine in department store Selfridges last week.
