BMG Walking On Sunshine for a cool £10m
WALKING On Sunshine is a classic earworm – catchy and irritating – and now Katrina & The Waves’ 30-year-old song is going to make money for BMG.
The Bertelsmann-owned music company has shelled out £10m for the rights to every song written by Katrina & The Waves.
Walking On Sunshine was first released in 1985, becoming top 10 hits on both sides of the Atlantic. It is one of the most consistently successful songs in UK music.
The group’s hits also includes Love Shine a Light, which won the 1997 Eurovision Song Contest.
BMG executive vice president for marketing & sync Patrick Joest said: “The striking thing about Walking On Sunshine is its ability to work across virtually every medium from film to TV and advertising … It is a song loved around the world, working across cultures and languages.”
