Bitter Cook needs to lose attitude and focus on form, says Vaughan
FORMER England skipper Michael Vaughan believes sacked one-day captain Alastair Cook needs to ditch any grudges he holds regarding his demotion and concentrate on finding red-ball form.
Cook this week suggested that England’s dismal World Cup performance proved the decision to oust him in favour of Eoin Morgan in December, just two months before the start of the tournament, was misplaced.
Rather than dwell on the past, Vaughan insists Test captain Cook should turn his attentions to regaining his batting prowess ahead of next month’s three-Test tour of the Caribbean and the summer series against New Zealand and Australia.
“He is clearly bitter and that’s a bad mentality to have when you think he will be back leading the team in a couple of weeks time in the West Indies,” said Vaughan.
“He has to clear that out of his head. England need him scoring runs. He has to score runs in the Caribbean and against New Zealand so by the time the Ashes arrive in July nobody is talking about his place in the side. He hasn’t scored a century in any form of the game for two years. That has to change in the West Indies.”
