Biblical rains pour on London, flooding areas and dampening summer hopes
London was subject to rains of biblical proportions yesterday, which saw cars submerged and abandoned amid flash flooding, as July dampens summer plans for Londoners.
The most severe flooding was spotted in parts of North and West London and has continued to cause travel chaos for Londoners.
The Circle line was suspended this morning, while Hammersmith & City and London Overground were part-suspended.
The Met Office has offered a glimmer of hope, however, as it has forecast highs of 29 degrees Celcius for this weekend.
Maida Vale’s roads were awash after around three inches of rain fell in just 90 minutes.
South Hampstead was also impacted, as residents waded through shin-deep water in wellies.
Shopping hopes for those near Westfield shopping centre in White City were foiled too, with cars at a standstill on the dual carriageway.
The flash floods cause drainage systems to overflow in some areas of West London, as one Twitter user said they had ‘never seen any flood like this in the UK’.
Videos of Portobello road also circulated social media, as the rain – which was accompanied by thunder and lightning in some areas – flooded ground-level shops.
Areas like Chiswick, Kingston and Richmond were also particularly affected.
