Bentley invests £800m to build new car in Crewe
LUXURY car firm Bentley is to build its first SUV model at its Crewe factory, a decision that it says will create 1,000 British jobs.
Bentley will invest £800m in its Crewe headquarters and new model development over the next three years. The new SUV will go on sale in 2016.
The company, owned by Volkswagen, already employs around 4,000 people at its Crewe site.
“The support of everyone involved with the company has been fundamental to this decision, which will ensure sustainable growth for the company,” said chairman and chief executive Wolfgang Schreiber.
Prime Minister David Cameron and business secretary Vince Cable both welcomed the announcement.
“It is another important milestone in strengthening our economy… One sector that we know is sprinting ahead in the global race is our booming automotive industry,” said Cameron in a statement. Bentley delivered 4,279 cars worldwide in the first six months of the year, up nine per cent on last year.
