Benteke targets silverware after Liverpool move
Striker Christian Benteke believes he possesses the firepower to rid manager Brendan Rodgers of an unwanted association with a lack of silverware after completing his £32.5m move to Liverpool from Aston Villa last night.
Belgium hitman Benteke, who scored 49 goals in 101 appearances for Villa, became Liverpool’s seventh recruit of a busy close season after signing a long-term contract at Anfield.
Rodgers is the only Liverpool boss in more than 50 years to go trophyless in his first full three years in the job, and was blighted by a chronic lack of goals last term as the Reds finished fifth in the Premier League.
Their struggles in front of goal followed the sale of Uruguay forward Luis Suarez and the prolonged absence of injury-plagued England frontman Daniel Sturridge, while Raheem Sterling last week joined Manchester City for £49m.
“I came here to win trophies. I came here to reach some great goals with the team,” said Benteke.
“I know Liverpool is a big story. I’m happy to be part of this team and will try to help this team reach its goals.”
