Why Rolex’s Tudor Heritage Black Bay watch is best for the beach
Why Tudor’s handsome devil tops our chart of this summer’s best beach timepieces
Passport? Check. Boarding pass? Check. Embarrassingly garish new swimmers? Double check! Watch? Oh, hang on…
It always seems easy enough slipping from boardroom to board shorts, but come the summer, deciding on what to wear on your wrist poolside is a different matter altogether. Colour, character, something cheaper and more cheerful are all good attributes for a seaside watch – everything that your sober Omega is not, in other words. But on the more practical side, water resistance is obviously a must, as is robustness, plus a strap that’s made of anything but leather (UV discolours it, sea salt degrades it, and it stinks when you sweat). What you’re looking at here – the Tudor Heritage Black Bay in blue (£2,120) – embodies all these things and more.
It’s been about 30 years since Rolex’s more accessible brand Tudor was on these shores, but come September the new Watches of Switzerland flagship store on Regent Street will join a select few retailers in carrying its youthful collection, including this gorgeous reissue of Tudor’s first diving watch, released the same year its parent started producing a higher-end version, the now-ubiquitous Submariner.
