Barcelona and Real Madrid title race threatened by Spanish Football Federation La Liga suspension
The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) intends to suspend all competitions from May 16, threatening the conclusion of the La Liga season.
The penultimate round of fixtures in La Liga is currently scheduled for Sunday May 17 with each team's final game due a week later.
With Real Madrid trailing Barcelona by just two points, the title race will not be decided before the suspension. The Copa Del Rey final is also scheduled for 30 May.
RFEF chiefs are currently embroiled in a row with the Spanish government over a new law imposing collective TV rights deals in place of a former system which allowed individual clubs to negotiate their own deals.
Barcelona and Real Madrid have traditionally been able to negotiate huge deals while the majority of La Liga clubs make do with comparatively tiny TV revenues.
However in a statement, the RFEF accused the government's law of doing little to solve any of the problems seriously affecting amateur football, and said it was acting after failing to find an agreement after three months of talks.
Before the Football Federation's announcement, the Association of Spanish footballers was also due to strike in protest at the low percentage of TV rights money diverted to players.
More than 600,000 players and 30,000 matches will be affected by the suspension, although the RFEF reiterated its "offer of dialogue to the Spanish government".
