Barca: Suarez only cost £65m
BARCELONA claim they convinced Liverpool to accept a knock-down bid of £65m for Luis Suarez – significantly less than the £75m release clause in the Uruguay striker’s Anfield contract.
The Reds allowed Suarez to leave in July, having blocked his exit 12 months earlier, but had been thought to have received full price.
“The release clause was £75m,” said Barca director Jordi Mestre. “We were able to lower the price through the good work of our executives and because Suarez wanted to come here. We agreed £65m.”
Suarez, currently serving a four-month ban for biting Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini at the World Cup, insists he is a reformed character. He said: “I don’t do that anymore.”
