Barbarians poised to give Tomkins a taste of union
ENGLAND starlet Sam Tomkins is being lined up for a surprise union debut just days after insisting his immediate future remained in rugby league.
Tomkins, part of the side beaten 30-8 by Australia in Saturday’s Four Nations final in Leeds, ruled out a code switch for at least three years when he signed a lucrative new deal with Wigan earlier this month.
But the 22-year-old full-back is considering dipping his toes in the 15-man game by turning out for the Barbarians in the weekend’s Killik Cup fixture against Australia at Twickenham.
Barbarians coach Graham Henry, who last month led New Zealand to World Cup glory, is expected to name his final squad today, and team manager Alan Evans confirmed Tomkins was in contention.
Evans said: “We’ve had talks with Wigan and we hope to resolve it in the next 24 hours.”
