Bangkok blast: Foreign Office confirms British national among those killed in attack

A British national was among those killed in yesterday's Bangkok bomb blast, which has claimed the lives of at least 20 people. 

 

The Foreign Office confirmed the death of a woman, who was living in Hong Kong. British Embassy staff in Thailand are assisting her family. 

 

Foreign secretary Philip Hammond said: “The loss of life and injury in Bangkok is horrific and I condemn this callous act of violence against completely innocent and unsuspecting members of the public.

 

“My thoughts are with the victims, their families and loved ones, and with the Thai people.”

 

Foreign Office officials are in close contact with the Thai authorities and have offered UK assistance in the investigation “of this abhorrent act”, he added.

 

Prime Minister David Cameron said he was "deeply saddened" by the news. "My thoughts are with her family and all those affected," he tweeted this afternoon.

British nationals in Thailand have been advised to check the Foreign Office website for the latest travel advice.

 

Thai officials today released images of the suspect behind yesterday's bomb, which exploded near to the busy Erawan Shrine, Ratchaprasong, at 7pm. At least 20 people are thought to have died, although some estimates put the death toll at around 27. Some 120 people are believed to have been injured.

 

A second bomb exploded today, although no one was injured.
