Arty Labour off to Roundhouse for Election Gala Dinner
The Roundhouse in Camden forewent its usual crowd of thesps and music fans last night to welcome Labour and its wealthy friends and for a night of social spending.
Stephen Fry delighted crowds with his hosting skills, as big ticket objects were auctioned off, including a sculpture by Antony Gormley (with a reserve price of £100,000) and biggest of all – the chance to kick a ball with er, Balls.
Not all of Labour’s staunch supporters were there though. While City spinners RLM Finsbury had a table, Blair’s former media adviser turned spinner Tim Allan and his PR firm Portland were absent. “I’ve got dinner with a friend,” Allan told The Capitalist.
A friend that won’t ask him to fork out £15,000 for a ceramic pig, one imagines.
■ The football has had everybody riled up this week as we gallop towards Sunday’s final and the situation was no different at Tuesday night’s British Banker’s Association (BBA) dinner at Mansion House. According to our sources there was much joshing about the BBA not having erected a big screen for the semi-final, so when BBA chief Anthony Browne took to the stage just after 9pm, he made sure to tell everyone the score – two nil to Germany. There was much commotion throughout the room, however, as the former journalist’s figures become increasingly off; Germany had scored another three goals before he had a chance to sit down.
