Amazon to create 500 new UK jobs as it opens giant distribution depot in Coalville, Leicestershire – right in the middle of the UK
When the Forth bridge was closed just before Christmas because of high winds, Scots joked that one of Amazon's UK distributions centre was north of it.
But Santa's elves need worry no more, after Amazon announced the impending opening of a giant, 1m sq ft, distribution warehouse in Coalville, Leicestershire, this autumn. Coalville, just FYI, is smack-bang in the centre of the UK.
In a statement today, the company said the new depot will create 500 jobs over three years – which, alongside another 2,000 jobs created in the UK this year, will bring Amazon's total UK workforce to 14,500.
The launch will bring the total number of UK warehouses to 11 – alongside two in Doncaster and spaces in Dunfermline, Dunstable, Gourock, Hemel Hempstead, Milton Keynes, Peterborough, Rugeley and Swansea Bay.
Andrew Bridgen, MP for North West Leicestershire, said: “North West Leicestershire continues to be an area good for business and long-term investment and we are currently enjoying one of the highest economic growth rates outside London and the South East.
"I am pleased that such a reputable company has the confidence in the area not only given its strategic location but also for the recruitment of a wide ranging work force.”
