A third of all new businesses will be pop-ups by 2017
It seems the pop-up revolution has well and truly begun, after new research showed 11.6m people plan to start their own business ventures within the next two years and 29 per cent of those plan to start out with pop-ups.
The study, by EE, showed pop-ups, shops that open short-term businesses in available retail space, are big business – contributing an annual £2.1bn to the UK economy.
The most popular choice for a new pop-up – 30 per cent according to EE – will be food, with 18 per cent aiming to sell drinks.
Also among the top five were arts and crafts (15 per cent) fashion (12 per cent) and jewellery and accessories (11 per cent).
Appear Here is planning a competition (supported by EE) to help those aiming to start a pop up. The “Space for Ideas” campaign will give winners two weeks of space in a central London prime retail space as well as other perks, including £3,000 in cash.
