Fury over McDonalds’ 2012 exclusivity
THE organisers of the 2012 London Olympics came under fire yesterday as it emerged that McDonald’s will be the only food brand seen at the event.
Other vendors will be present at the Olympic venues but, as official sponsor, the golden arches will be the only brand seen by hungry visitors.
The agreement seemingly undermines environment minister Hilary Benn’s strategy, unveiled on Tuesday, to promote healthier eating and locally sourced produce.
“I think it is embarrassing for London, as we won the bid based on promoting local businesses,” said Green party London Assembly member Jenny Jones. “I think the sponsorship should be dumped as soon as possible.”
The British Heart Foundation said the plans were driven by money rather than health and fitness.
Both McDonald’s and the London 2012 organisers said a range of food would be available at the games, though details to be confirmed.
