CITY MOVES WHO’S SWITCHING JOBS
Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has appointed Joe Carrell, currently an official at its global health policy and advocacy group, to head its new London office. Carrell, who joined the foundation in 2001, will move over from Seattle in January 2010, to oversee the organisation’s first European outpost, which is part of a recent effort by the foundation to build closer ties to European governments and global aid organisations.
Barclays
Barclays confirmed Roger Jenkins, its executive chairman of investment banking in the Middle East, will leave the company to set up a new corporate finance advisory firm targeting sovereign wealth investors. Jenkins said that the new firm will provide corporate finance advice to clients and look for alternative investment opportunities, operating from offices in the Middle East, Europe and California. It will focus on sovereign wealth investors and help raise and invest money, as well as handle existing portfolios. Jenkins will continue to work with Barclays in the future, advising on its business in the Middle East and supporting the development of the bank’s sovereign wealth client group.

LinkedIn has announced the appointment of Mike Pilcher as corporate solutions director for Europe. As part of his brief to grow the firm in Europe, Pilcher will be responsible for the further development of LinkedIn’s Talent Advantage platform which helps firms recruit the best candidates. Pilcher has more than 20 years of business and enterprise sales experience. He joins from Marketbright, a Web 2.0 marketing automation company, where he was heading up sales and marketing. His experience includes working for large enterprise companies such as Oracle where he built the UK Insurance group, First Data and Sybase.
City University
City University London has appointed David Chan – an experienced chief information officer (CIO) and former head of business systems at the BBC – as director of its Centre for Information Leadership. The recently-launched, inter-disciplinary centre is dedicated to developing the CIOs of the future and has been formed in recognition of the role’s growing influence in business and policy-making. David has previously held board-level IT directorship and management consultancy roles across several industry sectors, including financial services, central and local government, media, new media and utilities.
Zurich Financial Services
Zurich Financial Services Group has appointed Alan Fairhead, currently chief underwriting officer for Global Corporate, to the position of chief underwriting officer for Europe General Insurance, effective 1 September. He will also retain his role as chief underwriting officer for Zurich Insurance. Since joining Zurich in 1999, Fairhead held various senior positions, among others as managing director of Global Corporate UK. From December 2004 until now he has been chief underwriting officer for Global Corporate.
