Toyota quick fix may not have worked
A FRESH wave of pain is threatening to submerge troubled carmaker Toyota after complaints its “quick fix” on faulty accelerators may have failed.
At least 10 complaints have been lodged claiming the fault that led to the recall of more than nine milion cars worldwide was still present after being serviced. The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is reviewing the cases. More than 190,000 Toyota cars have been recalled in the UK.
The firm said this week it had fixed more than one million of the recalled cars.
Sales at the embattled manufacturer dropped almost five per cent amid the controversy, better than some of the more pessimistic analyst predictions. However, it is bracing itself for poor sales during March, which is expected to be the most popular month of the year for car sales.
Toyota sales last month were 17 per cent higher than the same period last year at 3,439 but well below overall market growth.
New car sales in Britain jumped 26.4 per cent last month from a year earlier but are forecast to tail off after a car scrappage scheme ends next month. New car sales are expected to fall 10 per cent this year.
