Jagielka error saves Villa in the draw which neither team wanted
ASTON VILLA (2) v/s EVERTON (2)
AN INJURY-TIME own goal from Phil Jagielka salvaged a point for Aston Villa, although Martin O’Neill’s men lost more ground in the race for fourth place.
Victory would have seen Villa leapfrog Liverpool to within five points of fourth-place Manchester City, but Tim Cahill’s headed opener from Leighton Baines’ cross on 23 minutes gave in-form Everton the perfect start.
Gabriel Agbonlahor brought Villa level with his 50th goal for the club on 72 minutes, glancing home a header, but Everton were soon back in the ascendancy when Cahill struck with his head once again.
The win would have taken David Moyes’ men to within a point of Villa in the table, but with just seconds left, England hopeful Jagielka headed into his own net, while under pressure from John Carew.
Meanwhile, Wigan were held to a 0-0 draw by relegated Portsmouth in a drab encounter at the DW Stadium.
