Fisher’s victory seals double
ROSS FISHER completed a famous English double after clinching the biggest win of his career in the World Match Play Championship.
The 28-year-old defeated American Anthony Kim 4&3 in yesterday’s final in Casares, southern Spain, to claim a third Tour victory and the £750,000 winner’s cheque.
And victory also put the seal on a momentous day for English golf after Ian Poulter had earlier clinched the weather-hit Singapore Open.
This was the first year the event hadn’t been held at Wentworth in 34 years, so how it was ironic to see Wentworth pro Fisher bring the trophy back. An excellent final day saw him shoot a five-under-par 67 for the opening 18 holes and then six-under for the second round until victory was secured on the 15th hole.
“I’m absolutely ecstatic,” said Fisher, who climbs to fourth in the Race to Dubai standings and a career-high 15th in the world rankings. “It’s been a long, gruelling week but obviously worthwhile. Anthony Kim is a gritty competitor, one of the grittiest around.”
Poulter, meanwhile, shot a final round 72 to finish on 10-under-par – a shot ahead of China’s Liang Wen-chong with fast-finishing Graeme McDowell three shots adrift in fifth.
Poulter added: “It was good that I maintained my form the entire week, now I will try to maintain my form for the rest of the year.”
