Record breakers are what we need at Sarries
RECORDS are there to be broken. Two weeks ago we turned up at Northampton and ended their 18-month unbeaten home run at Franklin’s Gardens.
Now, tomorrow, we make the trip to Welford Road, Leicester for the last game of the regular Premiership season with an even bigger hurdle to overcome.
A draw in 1998 is Saracens’ only result in all 32 meetings at the Tigers’ lair, and it’s no easy task given that Leicester are bidding to go through an entire Premiership season unbeaten at Welford Road for a fifth time.
We need to win this game to stand any chance of playing the Premiership play-off at home, while London Irish host Northampton.
But, if I’m honest, our away record has been probably even better than our form at Vicarage Road this campaign, so an away game certainly wouldn’t be the end of the world.
We take on a Leicester side, who are already guaranteed top spot and who have set the trend in the Premiership this season. But with three straight wins under our belts, we go into it full of confidence and raring to go.
Unfortunately, we will be without our captain Steve Borthwick, who will miss the play-offs and also England’s summer tour of Australasia as his gets much-needed rest and recuperation on his knee injury. Carlos Nieto is also out for us, but we hope Alex Goode will return for the play-offs.
Brendan Venter is head coach of Saracens. The club’s annual Awards Dinner takes place at Wembley on Wednesday 19 May. For more information, or to make a table booking, call Ed Clark on 01727 792825.
