Lord Browne shortlisted for the National Grid chair
FORMER BP boss Lord Browne of Madingley is among the front-runners for the chairmanship of National Grid, a source said yesterday.
Browne was approached by the company about taking the job a few months ago, and is now thought to be up against just one other candidate for the role.
Browne, who left BP in 2007, was in April shortlisted to become chairman of commodities trader Glencore but lost out to Simon Murray.
Other candidates in the frame for the National Grid job, now eliminated, were George Rose, a non-executive who has retired from BAE Systems, and former BHP Billiton chief executive Paul Anderson.
The name of the other finalist for the National Grid job was not clear last night.
Current chairman Sir John Parker is set to step down at the firm’s annual meeting in Birmingham on 25 July after almost nine years in the job.
Spokespeople for National Grid and Lord Browne both declined to comment when contacted yesterday.
