City gives thumbs-up to chancellor but has little time for Vince Cable
GEORGE Osborne is doing a better job as chancellor than the City expected, according to our Voice of the City Panel.
PoliticsHome and City A.M. asked a cross-section of people from London’s business and financial community whether government ministers had performed better or worse than they had expected one year ago.
Over half (51 per cent) of the panellists said Osborne’s performance was better than they expected, against 21 per cent who said he was doing worse. Twenty-eight per cent said he was performing “as expected” and one per cent didn’t know.
The findings show Osborne has improved his standing in the City; the same panel said they would prefer Ken Clarke as chancellor prior to the 2010 general election.
But almost three quarters (72 per cent) of panellists said Vince Cable, the business secretary, had performed worse than they had expected against just seven per cent who said he had performed better than they expected. Twenty per cent said he had performed “as expected” while one per cent didn’t know.
• PoliticsHome interviewed 489 people from the specially recruited Voice of the City panel by email between 12 and 16 May. Members of the panel who respond to at least 80 per cent of surveys between now and September will be entered into a prize draw to win a luxury weekend in Paris. Full T&Cs available on request.
