UK retailers set to net £126m per goal in World Cup
UK retailers could net a £126m sales boost for every England goal scored after the group stages of the World Cup, according to research yesterday.
The extra sales of sportswear, TVs and food could top £2bn if England reaches the final, according to a report by the Centre for Retail Research (CRR).
Retail sales are projected to rise by £987m if the team reaches the quarter final, with an additional boost of £110m for pubs and clubs showing the games.
Almost half this rise (£459m) would come from food and drink, as fans stock up on snacks for match parties.
TVs and other electricals could make up a quarter (£250m), followed by sportswear (£200m) and barbeques (£28m). Betting companies are expected to make £1.2bn in additional revenues over the course of the competition, with the tournament lifting overall spending by four per cent.
