Kidd proves man of moment to snatch glory for City A.M.
CAPTAIN Jack Kidd scored in the last minute to hand Team City A.M. New York a dramatic 11-10 victory in the final of the MINT Polo in the Park tournament in London.
Kidd swooped to strike the winner in a Square Mile showdown against Team IG Index Paris with just seconds to spare of regulation time at the Hurlingham Club.
The two evenly-matched teams, who had fought their way through two rounds to reach the final, traded blows throughout the championship decider.
At 9-9 going into the final frame, Team City A.M. New York’s trio got their noses in front by converting a penalty shot, but the three men of Team IG Index Paris were soon level with a penalty of their own.
Then, with overtime beckoning and despite a heavy collision earlier on, skipper Kidd – brother of supermodel Jodie – pounced to claim the winning goal – and the trophy.
It capped three days of fast-paced Twenty20-style polo in south-west London in front of more than 32,000 spectators – a large proportion of them from the City.
Those who attended were also treated to stunt riding, military displays, and a number of skills events from the professional polo players.
On their way to the final, Team City A.M. New York, which also comprised Henry Brett and Jamie Morrison, saw off Otkritie Team Moscow in the first round and then Thomson Reuters Team Geneva in the semi-finals.
