Aggression the key to our domination, says Venus
DEFENDING champion Venus Williams believes her and sister Serena’s monopolisation of Wimbledon is down to one trait: aggression.
Between them they have won the title in seven of the last nine years and are firmly on course to improve that record this weekend.
Defeat for either of the Californians in today’s semi-finals would constitute one of the shocks of the tournament, so inevitable does their progress seem.
And Venus, who is vying for a third consecutive Wimbledon title, believes their combative approach is the key to their enduring success.
She said: “I just think the style of game Serena and I play, we play better than the other women. We’re just very aggressive. I think that shows in our results.”
Standing between Venus and a place in Saturday’s final is Russia’s Dinara Safina, who is itching to shed the label of the world No1 who has not won a Grand Slam.
“I hope people won’t say it now,” said Safina. “I’ve been in the semis at all four Grand Slams, so I think that’s something impressive.”
Serena, who has met her sister in the final three times, faces another Russian, the fourth seed Elena Dementieva, who knows she is in for a fight. She said: “We’ll see if I’m going to be ready for the big one.”
