Westwood struggles to deal with Open nightmare
LEE WESTWOOD admits he is struggling to come to terms with his Open heartbreak.
The English hope squandered a two-shot lead going into the turn before a three-putt bogey on the last hole saw him miss out on a chance to join Stewart Cink and Tom Watson in a play-off.
It was the latest in a long line of disappointments for the frustrated 36-year-old, who is without a tournament victory since 200 and narrowly missed out on last year’s US Open and a French Open play-off last month.
“I’ve played okay all year,” the Worksop-born Ryder Cup star said. “At the French Open I lost in a play-off and then at Loch Lomond I played very well again and had a good chance there.
“Then obviously last week at The Open I feel like I ought to have won it. It keeps you awake at night for a few weeks, but you have to get over it and move onto the next one.
“The USPGA is in a few weeks time and is another opportunity to win a major. It can’t come along soon enough. I feel like I’m getting closer to winning a major. I’m certainly contending more often and getting myself in good positions.”
