Brazil axe boss Dunga
FOOTBALL: Brazil manager Dunga has been sacked after failing to lead his team beyond the quarter-finals of the World Cup.
Dunga had said he planned to leave the post after the tournament, but Brazilian football chiefs made sure by dismissing him and his staff.
A successor is expected to be appointed by the end of the month, with ex-AC Milan coach Leonardo among the favourites.
Jimenez wins French play-off
GOLF: Spain’s Miguel Angel Jimenez won a three-way play-off to claim the Alstom French Open and boost his Ryder Cup hopes.
Jimenez blew a two-shot lead by finding the water at the 18th but beat compatriot Alejandro Canizares and Italian Francesco Molinari in a play-off.
Victory lifted the 46-year-old from 17th to sixth in the Ryder Cup race and was his 10th since turning 40 – a record for the European Tour.
Ronaldo fathers a son
FOOTBALL: Portugal star Cristiano Ronaldo has become a father, he confirmed yesterday in a statement that gave few details.
The 25-year-old said the baby boy’s mother, who is not attached to Ronaldo and thought to be American, wished to remain anonymous and had relinquished custody.
He said: “It is with great joy and emotion that I inform I have recently become a father to a baby boy.”
Bopara blows Windies away
CRICKET: Ravi Bopara made up for his England snub by hitting 168 as the Lions beat West Indies A by 124 runs to reach the tri-series final.
Bopara – left out of the senior squad for the forthcoming one-day series with Bangladesh – struck 23 fours and two sixes off 140 balls.
