Redknapp commits to Spurs until 2013
TOTTENHAM manager Harry Redknapp has allayed uncertainty surrounding his future by signing a new contract committing him to White Hart Lane until 2013.
Redknapp’s previous deal was due to expire next year but Spurs chiefs have moved to secure the coach who led them to their best ever Premier League finish last season.
The 63-year-old’s impressive results since taking charge saw him linked with a number of high-profile positions this summer, including the manager’s jobs at Liverpool, England and Al-Ahli.
But the former Portsmouth boss is said to have turned down the Dubai outfit, despite the lure of a £3m net salary, while the Liverpool and England roles are no longer available.
Redknapp’s goal is now to steer Tottenham into the Champions League proper, having ensured their place in the qualifying round for the first time by finishing fourth.
The renowned transfer dealer has also targeted new faces for the coming campaign, with Redknapp admitting he is interested in prising Brazil striker Luis Fabiano from Sevilla.
England midfielder Joe Cole, released by Chelsea, is also on his radar, while Nigeria defender Taye Taiwo has declared his desire to join Spurs.
“He’s a fabulous player and would be a brilliant addition to any team,” said Redknapp of Luis Fabiano, who has also been linked with AC Milan.
“It was put to us that he might be available, but we’ve not made contact with his club Sevilla and I haven’t discussed transfer targets with our chairman Daniel Levy, apart from trying to do a deal with Joe Cole.
“I am not unhappy with the squad I have, but of course if a special player came along I would look at it, and Fabiano is a special player all right. He is a class act, but he might be on mega money, so it might prove to be impossible for us.”
