New boy Kolarov backs City to rule Europe
MANCHESTER CITY’S latest recruit Aleksandar Kolarov believes the club can become kings of Europe.
The Serbian full-back turned down offers from several other clubs to join Roberto Mancini’s men in a £19m deal from Lazio.
And the 24-year-old has already set his sights on winning silverware – including the top prize in European football.“The Premier League is the best in the world and he wants us to go further and win the Premier title and the Champions League,” Kolarov said. “For a young player like me, this is the best opportunity. It’s the dream.
“I had the opportunity to join other teams – the names are not important. When I spoke with Mr Mancini, my choice was Manchester City because I know they are a good team. I think maybe a great team.
“I’m coming back early next week to train with the players who aren’t touring America. I want to start as soon as I can, and I can’t wait to meet all the other guys.”
Indeed, Kolarov is not the only one to laud City’s chances of winning silverware – even Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp is getting in on the act.
Redknapp’s Spurs side robbed City out of a Champions League place last season, but believes it’s only a matter of time before the Eastlands club not only break into the top four, but actually win the title.
“They can go out and sign almost anybody,” said Redknapp, whose Spurs side are currently with City on a pre-season trip to America. “They have come over here to New York and have almost 80 people in their party – it is just incredible.
“Money seems to be no problem, because the man who owns the club has so much. I genuinely think that eventually they will win the championship.”
