Unemployment rises in Europe but US manages to add jobs
JOBLESSNESS rose again across Europe in October but fell in the US, according to figures out yesterday from the 34-nation Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development.
The developing crisis pushed up Eurozone unemployment from 10.2 per cent to 10.3 per cent on the month, up 0.2 percentage points on the year.
Spanish unemployment hit 22.8 per cent, up 2.3 percentage points on October last year, while Austria’s unemployment, at 4.1 per cent, remains the lowest in the EU. Germany’s unemployment fell from 5.7 per cent to 5.5 per cent
Across the whole EU, unemployment rose from 9.7 to 9.8 per cent.
The US, meanwhile, saw unemployment slip from 9.1 per cent to nine per cent, and down to 8.6 per cent in November.
