ANALYST OF THE YEAR | The Shortlist day 4
ANALYSTS are the heart and soul of the City, and the five on our list are legends in their own sectors. Whether it is looking at the future of the energy industry, pontificating on the biggest M&As, or just looking at the movements of the markets in general, when the members of our shortlist talk, people listen.

ANDREW DOBBING, JP?MORGAN CAZENOVE
One of the most respected voices in the energy sector, Dobbing is a member of the oil and gas equity research team at JP Morgan Cazenove, where his analysis is a must-read for anybody with even the most passing interest in the movements in this fast-moving industry. He has an admirably global pedigree, too. Before moving to London, he worked in oil services stocks in Oslo, with roles at Alfred Berg, ABN Amro and Danske Securities, all in Oslo.
KAREN OLNEY, UBS
Head of European thematic research at UBS in London, Olney has made several good calls this year. She was one of the first analysts to flag the investment case for Germany, in February, and also made the call that investors should invest in dividends, a tactic that has proved profitable. She previously worked at Merrill Lynch and Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein, and before that was a fund manager and chartered accountant.
LORNA TILBIAN, NUMIS
A media analyst for a quarter of a century, Tilbian is one of the best-known in the industry. Admirers applaud the way that she “can see through corporate wool-pulling at 40 paces”. Tilbian joined the sparky Numis in 2001 having previously worked at City firms SG Warburg and Panmure Gordon. She has long been a regular in Media Week’s Power 50 list, and was recently appointed a business ambassador by the government.
SIMON WARD, HENDERSON
A highly-respected analyst with his finger on the financial pulse of the City, Ward has worked as an economist in financial markets for over 20 years, working at WorldInvest, Lombard Street Research and Bank Julius Baer, before joining Henderson following its acquisition of New Star in April 2009. His monetary perspective has led him into criticism of the Bank of England and the government, and recently he has been at the forefront of those calling for an interest-rate hike, something which has chimed with many in the Square Mile.
ANDREW WOOD, SANFORD BERNSTEIN
A hugely respected figure in the City, and a man who has left many an awards dinner with a gong in his hand. Although he is based in New York, he is well-known as one of the leading European equities analysts. He has been at Sanford Bernstein since 2001, having previously worked for a decade in the food and drink sector, first at PepsiCo and then at Nabisco. Unsurprisingly, then, he is an expert on that sector, and his big call this year was Cadbury-Kraft, arguing all the way along that Kraft would succeed in its takeover.
